5 Tips for Finding a Fitness Class in your 40s, 50s

Congrats, you’ve made the decision to prioritize your health this year... but you’re not quite sure where to start.

Personal training is too much for your budget, so you’re looking into group fitness classes. But there are 2 huge obstacles in your way:

  • There are so many types of classes, how do I know what to choose?

  • How do I avoid showing up to a class of 20-somethings and feeling out of place?

1.) Find a class that includes Strength Training

  • Circuit trainings, yoga, barre, and pilates are great strength-based classes

  • Strength training reduces injury, muscle deterioration, and loss of bone density as we age

  • Strength training burns fat and improves your quality of movement

2.) Look for small groups

  • Groups of less than 10 people ensure adequate attention from the instructor to your form/technique

  • Small groups are better for those with injuries or limitations because trainers can customize your workout

  • Small groups are typically non-threatening and less intimidating

3.) View gyms’ photos to see what their members are like

  • Find a class that has members around your age and fitness level (or aspiring level)

  • Be cautious of classes that are full of athletic 20-somethings, unless you think you’re up for the challenge!

4.) Calculate your Time Commitment each day

  • Chances are your day is low on time due to kids, work, etc; so first figure out how much time you can allot to working out

  • Calculate class duration, driving time (including traffic), and shower

  • Find a 30 or 45 min class if you know time is limited

5.) Do a Trial Class!

  • Was the trainer attentive, knowledgeable, and likeable?

  • Was the workout challenging yet enjoyable?

  • Ask classmates for their input! What trainers are their favorites? What type of progress have they made there?

  • Schedule a Trial w/ Sweat City Fitness in the righthand margin!
